Where Has L.J. Smith Gone?
L.J. Smith has not been a factor in the Eagles offense yet this season.
The sixth year tight end out of Rutgers has done nothing to help this beleaguered offense in the red zone or anywhere else on the field.
Smith has a measly 10 catches for a total of 77 yards. Two of those catches were for touchdowns.
If the Eagles wish to improve their red zone scoring they need Smith to step up his game as a big bodied tight end and either learn to block or find a way to get open in the end zone.
The talk each year during training camp has been, ‘this is the year L.J. Smith is going to step up and be the tight end the Eagles thought he was coming out of college’ and ‘He will finally turn into one of the top tight ends in the league.’
Well, not to burst anyone’s bubble here but Smith hasn’t done any of that. I wouldn’t be surprised if we start seeing second year tight end Brent Celek more often in red zone packages if Smith can’t figure out how to block or catch the ball.
Smith has done nothing, nothing, this year to help the offense and it is getting old watching and hearing the same thing each year with him.
The coaches keep telling us to wait and see with Smith, he will develop. Well, it has been six years now and we are still waiting.
Maybe it would have been a good idea to trade for a future Hall of Fame tight end in Tony Gonzalez, who was made available by the Chiefs at the deadline.
Oh well. I guess we missed out on having a legitimate tight end for another season. I guess we will just have to wait and see if Smith finally opens his eyes and plays football.
